Logging off the Toxicity of Twitter (X)
Twitter was a great thing 7-10 years ago - it was the center of real-time information in the world, there was a system for showing legitimacy (checkmarks) of certain figures, and generally information was freely available. I’d love to see that old twitter back, but I’m afraid it won’t ever be back there.
Yesterday there was a YC founder who had been through a really tough SF-violence based situation celebrating starting a new company - I don’t have full context but I know YC backed her for another co - and I know that YC has good judgement in founders normally.
It was the third time in a month that I have opened the app to something adhorent following the Charlie Kirk killing and the murder of Iryna Zarutska. I’m done until something changes dramatically (likely new ownership).
People attacked her like crazy over this cofounder drama - and there was nothing to help moderate or stop that. I haven’t been perfect on twitter, but it feels like a mix of legitimacy that’s paid + anonymity has been a failed experiment, and I’m taking my content business elsewhere - I’ll be posting here from now on. There are only good people and stupid people and I feel like I’m becoming one of the stupid ones using that app.
I think the owners of twitter are well meaning to remove censorship, I also don’t think we have a perfect idea of how to regulate and control information flows on the internet - I plan on living here on substack much more - it’s a great product.
